The capital city of India is New Delhi - crowded, spicy, loud and utterly romantic. It is a city of extremes, where summer temperatures can range from 40 degrees Celsius, to the chilly winter maxima of 4 degrees. The social differences in New Delhi are also amazing, and this land which was once known mostly for its poor and hungry population is now becoming established on the world stage as an excellent five star destination for luxury holidays in Asia.
New Delhi has now become quite a cosmopolitan city, with various Indian cultures as well as the influence of the Western world very apparent. It is a colorful and festive city - New Delhi celebrates Republic Day, Gandhi’s birthday and Independence Day with great aplomb, as well as holding festivals for religious holidays such as Durga Puja, Lohri, Holi, Maha Shivaratri, Eid Ul-Adha, Eid ul-Gitr, Buddha’s birthday and of course, Christmas.
There are plenty of awe-inspiring, exciting and historical activities in New Delhi. One of these is Qutb’s Complex, an historical building surrounding the first sandstone victory tower built by Qutbuddin Aibak, the first sultan of Delhi. The Victory Tower’s building began in 1193, so this is a truly ancient sight. The buildings surrounding the complex are also of interest historically, displaying some of the earliest Islamic architecture in India.
New Delhi is also home to the National Museum, which is home to some magnificent pieces of history, covering up to 5 millenia. Some of the most beautiful pieces include the 12th century statue of the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva, and a wonderfully detailed collection of miniature paintings. There are Indus Valley relics here, from around 2,700 BC, and many artefacts from the ancient Silk Road.
However, you will need a base from which to explore New Delhi on your luxury rest in Asia. Many travelers find that the top-end market for accommodation on luxury Asian holidays has quite a lot of parity between hotels, so if you are looking to take advantage of India’s low cost of living accommodation prices compared to the west, you will want one of the best of the best hotels to stay at. It seems strange to celebrate one of the least free and arguably one of the saddest periods in Indian history, colonial rule, however the historic atmosphere is so at odds with modern Delhi that the memory does not even rankle. The Imperial is said to have one of the deepest. Largest pools in Delhi - if you are taking your Asian luxury holiday during summer, this will be the place to stay!
